UTSA students to vote for new Student Government Association officers March 6 and 7.

(March 3, 2017) -- When The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) student body votes for a new set of officers next week for the Student Government Association (SGA), the ballot will be longer than usual. For the first time in UTSA history, seven UTSA students are running to be the next SGA president.

The winner will fill the shoes of current SGA President Andrew Hubbard, who will graduate with a finance degree in May. Barry McKinney, associate dean of students and director of UTSA Student Activities, attributes the growing interest to Hubbard and the SGA administration.

"Andrew has really taken the power of his position and spread that across the SGA to the extent that more people have had the opportunity to see how they can make a difference at UTSA," McKinney said. "It's that excitement of what can happen on campus."

Six of the seven presidential candidates are currently involved with SGA. Hubbard said they're individuals with big ideas who have high aspirations for UTSA.

"Top-tier universities have top-tier students," Hubbard said. "And top-tier students are high achievers, academically focused and willing to take risks and do big things."

The UTSA SGA President has three key roles: serving as chief executive officer over the organization, advocating for the student body outside of UTSA, such as speaking with state legislators and city council, by being the voice of the students, and speaking at public events on behalf of the university.

While Hubbard's time in office is coming to an end, he hopes he has planted a seed that will help UTSA and its students flourish.

"It's not what I did in this one year," Hubbard said. "How did I contribute to the next year? It's the relay race." He offers this advice to the next SGA president and administration.

"Be flexible to change and grow the vision of UTSA. "Do your best and I hope you can do far bigger and better things for UTSA than I can imagine."

The UTSA SGA election is March 6 and 7. All UTSA students can vote on Rowdy Link.
