(April 17, 2017) -- The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) is a designated early voting site for the May 6 Bexar County General Election. Any registered Bexar County voter may cast a ballot at UTSA April 24 to April 27, April 29, May 1 and May 2 in the H-E-B University Center Bexar Room (HUC 1.102) on the Main Campus.

The election will decide the next San Antonio mayor, district representatives to city council and the 2017 Bond Program. UTSA is requesting an investment of $10 million from the 2017 City Bond Initiative to support the development of a $35 million multi-purpose team facility. UTSA Athletics as well as visiting soccer and track and field competitors will benefit from locker rooms, meeting rooms, a weight and conditioning room, and medical training areas.

This semester, the UTSA Center for Civic Engagement has formally partnered with RepresentSA, a city-wide collaborative with more than 12 organizations and business working together to double the voter turnout in this election. In the last municipal race, just 12 percent of Bexar County voters participated, the highest it has been since the 2009 election.

Although the numbers are slowly increasing, 12 percent is still an incredibly low turnout for the 7th largest city in the U.S," said Brian Halderman, director of the UTSA Center for Civic Engagement. "We lag well behind the national average of 20 percent turnout for local elections in a spring election cycle. Thanks to our students' efforts to register large numbers of voters on campus this academic year, our campus community has an opportunity to improve voter turnout for this election."

The Center for Civic Engagement has launched a user-friendly Voter Engagement page to aid UTSA students, faculty and staff through this election phase.

UTSA officials also encourage area residents and those employed at Valero, NuStar, and other local businesses, to use this convenient early voting location. Marked reserved parking will be available for voters on the south side of the H-E-B University Center.

Early voting times at UTSA:

Monday, April 24 – Thursday, April 27
8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Saturday, April 29

Monday, May 1 – Tuesday, May 2
