Students prepare for STEM careers with program established at UTSA

San Antonio TexPREP students attend the 2016 closing ceremony.

(July 27, 2017) -- Thousands of young San Antonio students who have spent the summer learning STEM skills will celebrate their accomplishments during a closing ceremony of the San Antonio Texas Prefreshman Engineering Program (TexPREP). The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Institute for P-20 Initiatives’ TexPREP program has partnered with the U.S. Army San Antonio Recruiting Battalion to host the 39th San Antonio TexPREP closing ceremony at 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 27, 2017, at the Freeman Coliseum.

Prior to the ceremony, students and their families can see interactive U.S. Army exhibits and speakers that provide insight to the leadership opportunities, STEM scholarships available, and benefits of an Army career.

There will also be college fair showcasing the opportunities available at UTSA and TexPREP partner colleges and universities. Dr. Steven J. Cyr, an orthopedic surgeon in San Antonio, will address more than 1,100 middle and high school students during the closing ceremony.

SA TexPREP was established in 1979 by UTSA mathematics professor Manuel Berriozabal. This summer, PREP students spent the past seven weeks at UTSA and other campuses throughout San Antonio working on projects and other hands-on activities to learn and apply advanced STEM concepts. Students also attended lectures and seminars. TexPREP students have the opportunity to earn college scholarships, high school credit, and for UPREP, college credit.
