(Nov. 22, 2017) – The University of Texas at San Antonio Small Business Development Center (UTSA SBDC) has been selected as one of 6,500 organizations nationwide championing Small Business Saturday in their communities.
More than 30 SBDC clients will be participating in the annual celebration on November 25 that encourages holiday shoppers to support small businesses in their communities.
“Local small businesses offer unique shopping experiences and the income generated by these businesses stays in our community, supporting many families,” said Morrison Woods, Small Business Development Center director.
According to the Small Business Administration, approximately 2.6 million small businesses operate across the state of Texas and make up more than 90% of all the business in the state.
Last fiscal year, the UTSA SBDC helped entrepreneurs in San Antonio, Bexar County, and 10 surrounding counties create or expand 203 businesses resulting in 1,119 new jobs for the community.
American Express launched Small Business Saturday in 2010 as an effort to support small businesses just after Black Friday and before Cyber Monday. Every year since, legislators have enacted resolutions celebrating the day. Senate Resolution 328, passed in November 2017, declared the Federal Senate will join the Small Business Administration in official observance of Small Business Saturday on November 25, 2017.
The Small Business Saturday Consumer Insights Survey, commissioned by American Express and the National Federation of Independent Business, estimated small business owners generated more than $15 billion on Small Business Saturday in 2016.
Individuals “shopping small” on Saturday, November 25 are encouraged to share their purchases and engagement by using the hash tag #shopsmall on social media.
