(May 1, 2019) -- For the second straight year, four UTSA programs have been honored with the NCAA Public Recognition Award.
The Roadrunners men’s cross country, men's golf, women's golf and volleyball programs each received Public Recognition Awards for academic excellence after scoring in the top 10 percent of their sports in the most recent Academic Progress Rates (APR).
Each year, the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear APR. The award recognizes teams with APRs in the top 10 percent nationally in each sport. All four UTSA programs achieved a perfect score of 1,000 over the past four years.
UTSA's men's golf, women’s golf and volleyball programs are repeat winners, while this is the first Public Recognition Award for men’s cross country. In fact, men’s golf and volleyball have received the award for three consecutive years and women’s golf now is a three-time recipient dating back to 2011-12.
"This is an outstanding honor for our athletics programs," President Taylor Eighmy said. “Our student-athletes, coaches and support staff are dedicated to creating a culture of academic excellence, and this is a wonderful reward for all of their hard work.”
"This recognition is an indicator of our commitment to supporting our student-athletes as they strive to achieve excellence," Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Lisa Campos said. "One of the Roadrunner Game Plan’s strategic initiatives is to develop and enhance support programs to ensure a quality student-athlete experience, so to receive four Public Recognition Awards for the second straight year after not having any just five years ago shows we are trending in the right direction.”
The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams. The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. It measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport.
UTSA now has received 15 Public Recognition Awards in the 14-year history of the program, including 11 in the last three years.
