MAY 13, 2024 — The Texas Demographic Center (TDC), housed at the UTSA Institute for Demographic and Socioeconomic Research, will explore the demographic changes unfolding in Texas at its annual data users conference.
The 2024 Texas Demographic Conference will be held at the Barbara Jordan State Office Building in Austin from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29, and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 30.
Participants will have the opportunity to connect with fellow data enthusiasts and gain valuable insights and updates about the latest census data and products.
The TDC will kick off its conference with American Community Survey (ACS) on the Road, a look at the ACS and its implications for policy development and funding at the local level.
Lloyd PotterStaff members from the Population Reference Bureau and the U.S. Census Bureau’s ACS division will lead the discussion.
This year’s lineup of speakers includes Texas State Demographer Lloyd Potter. His presentation, “State of the State: Texas Demographic Trends and Characteristics,” will provide a comprehensive overview of demographic trends in Texas.
David Troutman’s discussion, “Texas Talent Trajectory,” will offer insights into Texas students’ educational pathways from 8th grade to Texas’ higher education institutions and post-college opportunities. Troutman is the deputy commissioner for academic affairs at the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

The TDC is a focal point for the distribution of Census Bureau information for Texas. It is part of the national State Data Center (SDC) partnership program and supports the Census Bureau’s efforts in the areas of geography, product testing, survey participation, community partnership building, and other programs. Housed at UTSA and the Stephen F. Austin building in the Capitol Complex, the TDC serves as the lead state data center and coordinates a network consisting of coordinating agencies, state affiliates, local affiliates, and business and industry data centers.
Since 2009, Potter has served as the director of the Institute for Demographic and Socioeconomic Research and, in 2010, was named Texas State Demographer. His research interests include applied demography, water and energy consumption demographics, transportation, and injury and violence prevention.
