(April 18, 2018) – Fiesta is in the DNA of The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Department of Biology. The department’s first ever Fiesta medal is now on sale in the Department of Biology located in the Biotechnology, Science and Engineering Building (BSE 1.620) for $10. All proceeds will support the department's undergraduate mentoring program.
Established in August 2017, The Mentoring Program connects incoming pre-biology and microbiology freshman students with faculty mentors. The program gears students toward graduation and provides them with access to their mentor/distinguished scientist, connecting them with peers and building a professional relationship as they earn their science degree. The goal is to build the program to allow students more access to resources that will equip them for successful career.
Inspired by the the UTSA Graduate School’s 2017 Fiesta medal, the Department of Biology developed its 2018 Fiesta medal in celebration of the heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto. The medal design incorporates a DNA strand spinner in the center and the Rowdy head. The border of the medal features colorful flowers with an orange banner with the words “Viva Fiesta” inscribed. The ribbon is a combination of the UTSA orange and blue.
