On Monday March 7, Assistant Vice Provost for Information Technology Dr. Vanessa Kenon, Executive Director of Advising Services, Barbara Smith, along with Telecommunications Manager Mary-Margaret Echevarria and Communications Specialists Dr. Delia Swiger and Nicole Duff attended a session hosted by the internationally recognized news reporter Dan Rather and his grandson Martin Rather, as part of the launch of the 30th annual SXSWedu conference.

The hour-long session titled, "The Rather Prize: The Best Idea to Improve Texas Education," was held at the Austin Convention Center. It focused on The Rather Prize, a competition that the pair started last August, as a means of obtaining solutions from Texans regarding improving the education system.

During the session, the duo shared a few proposal submissions and announced the winner of the $10,000 prize. Austin's East Side High School's Student Training and Enrichment Project (STEP Up), spearheaded by Dr. Stanford Jeames earned first place.

In addition, the session featured an interactive aspect, where attendees were able to ask questions using their electronic devices. The Rathers, along with Dr. Jeames, answered several of these questions, including one posed by Dr. Kenon, as part of the session's conclusion.
