This fall, the UTSA Office of Information Technology's (OIT's) Online Learning department is hosting new faculty sessions in the FIT lab (MS 1.03.14) on the UTSA Main Campus. The sessions are designed to help familiarize UTSA faculty with some of the university resources to enhance the learning opportunities in the classroom.

This semester Online Learning is hosting two "Coffee Breaks", a 45 minute training session led by UTSA faculty. During these session experienced UTSA faculty members, who often use interesting techniques during their course, will be given the opportunity to share their best practices and ideas with their peers. The Coffee Breaks give faculty from other colleges the opportunity to collaborate and share their innovative ideas and best practices with their peers. Attendees are given FREE coffee and light refreshment. The NEW topics this semester include:

  • Blackboard Wikis Encouraging Student Collaboration to Enhance Learning:
    • September 29, 2016 11 a.m.-11:45 a.m.
    • Instructor: Dr. Candace Gann; Assistant Professor, UTSA COEHD
  • Strategies to Incorporate Teacher, Social, and Cognitive Presence in Hybrid and Online Courses:
    • November 10, 2016 11 a.m.-11:45 a.m.
    • Instructor: Dr. Martha Sidury Christiansen; Assistant Professor, UTSA COEHD
    • Dr. Sailaja Athyala; Instructional Designer, UTSA Office of Online Learning

"Faculty have provided great feedback on the Coffee Breaks, stating that they really like the new session topics that focus on best practices," said Director of Online Learning Marcela Ramirez. "It's an opportunity for faculty to take a coffee break and meet other peers interested in the use of instructional technology in the classroom. The faculty share ideas and strategies and also get to know our instructional designers who are there to assist them in choosing the best tools for their instructional goals."

Next month, Online Learning will be hosting the faculty workshop "Lecture Capture with Skype for Business", presented by Robert Granado, on October 4th from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. The workshop will be located in the UTSA John Peace Library  (JPL 4.04.12D) and is designed to educate UTSA faculty about the advantages that come from using Skype for Business in the classroom, office or at home. Furthermore, in October the following two NEW faculty sessions will be provided:

  • Manage Group peer Evaluations with Qualtrics
  • Don't Let Students Fall Behind: Monitoring Student Performance

OIT's Office of Online Learning offers many sessions and services to help increase the level of student success at UTSA. They offer Workshops and Training, Blackboard Support, and Instructional Design and Development to help ensure our faculty have the best tools and techniques to support themselves and their students in the classroom.
