Stay safe this month by ensuring your data remains safe during and after you shop online. Our attention has been drawn to some predictions for 2016. The National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) found, through a survey, that more than a third of gift givers plan to purchase internet-connected gadgets and gear for family and friends. These gadgets are part of what we call the Internet of Things (IoT). This is a perfect time to remind us how not to let hackers get in your way.

  • Change the password on internet connected devices.
  • Understand what personal information the device collects.
  • Read information provided by the manufacturer about how to keep the device secure over time.
  • Keep IoT mobile apps up to date with the latest software.
  • Research past history of security and privacy concerns about a device.

The Office of Information Security also urges the UTSA community to update their operating systems on mobile devices.  For more information, check out the National Cyber Security Alliance web page at www.staysafeonline.org!
