OIT Security Tip: Wi-Fi Safety

June 26, 2017

Here are a few safety tips while using public Wi-Fi networks.

  1. Turn off sharing. If you share files, music or printers or allow remote login on your home network, disable these settings prior to connecting to a public Wi-Fi network.
  2. Avoid automatically connecting to Wi-Fi hotspots. This will help your device from automatically connecting to malicious networks setup to steal your information.
  3. Use two-factor authentication.  Two-factor authentication consist of something you know and something you have when logging on to a network.  Your password is something you know and can be stolen. Your two-factor (second form of authentication) is something you have which is much harder to steal. Most popular websites support two-factor authentication.
  4. Turn on your firewall. Your firewall is one more layer of protection against would-be thieves.
