Introduction

Today’s learners need to know what artificial intelligence (AI) is, how it works, how to use it in their everyday lives, and how it could potentially be used in their future. Using AI requires skills and values which extend far beyond simply having knowledge about coding and technology. This course is designed by teachers, for teachers, and will bridge the gap between commonly held beliefs about AI, and what it really is. AI can be embedded into all areas of the school curriculum and this course will show you how.

This course will appeal to teachers who want to increase their general understanding of AI, including why it is important for learners; and/or to those who want to embed AI into their teaching practice and their students’ learning. There is also a unique opportunity to implement a Capstone Project for students alongside this professional learning course. Macquarie School of Education at Macquarie University and IBM Australia have collaborated to create this course which is aligned to AITSL ‘Proficient Level’ Australian Professional Standards at AQF Level 8.

What You'll Learn

Compare AI with human intelligence, broadly understand how it has evolved since the 1950s, and identify industry applications.

Modules

Module 1 - Introduction

In this module we'll introduce you to the course, tell you a little bit about why we think it's important that you and your students know about artificial intelligence (AI), and share with you some additional resources that might be useful.

Module 2 - Knowledge Module: What is AI, History of AI, and Applications of AI

In his book, “Make. Think. Imagine”, John Browne writes: “Artificial intelligence seems to be everywhere”. Some of its recent applications and achievements are well known; its potential to help build – or undermine – our civilization is immense. As teachers, it’s hard for us to ignore this potential. AI is changing the tools we have at our disposal and adds to the impetus for a curriculum which incorporates the so-called "21st century skills". In this module, you will think about how AI may be defined, particularly in relation to human intelligence, and how it has taken different forms. You will consider how it has evolved over the last 70 years and come to show promise in so many different applications.

Module 3 - Skills Module - Part A: Design Thinking, and Critical and Creative Thinking

Both design thinking, and critical and creative thinking (CCT), embrace skills which are important for teams working to solve problems with AI. In design thinking, these skills include collaboration, solving a problem with constraints, coming up with an idea, testing it, and if necessary, going back to the drawing board. The process is iterative. As for CCT, creative thinking is required to identify opportunities for AI, and critical thinking can help us evaluate its application. In this module, you will learn about the key principles and stages in the design thinking process. You will consider CCT from the perspective of convergent and divergent thinking, de Bono's Six Hats, and ACARA's four quadrant model. Examples of "creative AI" will be examined to help us understand the barriers to machine creativity.

Module 4 - Skills Module — Part B: Data Fluency, and Computational Thinking

When it comes to computational thinking skills, there are two people who’ve been very influential in bringing them to the classroom. One is Seymour Papert who in the 1960s developed a computer program for children. The other influential person is Jeanette Wing, a data scientist, who wrote a short article advocating the use of computational thinking. In this module, you’ll appreciate that human or AI decision-making depends crucially on the quality of data. You’ll think about what data is, how it takes different forms and can be represented in different ways. Using the website, Machine Learning for Kids, we will look at what has been a classic problem in image recognition: being able to distinguish between cats and dogs. You’ll also learn about just what computational thinking is, its place in the Australian Curriculum, and the ideas and skills behind it. You’ll see how these skills can be developed with both “unplugged” and computer-based activities.

Module 5 - Values Module: Ethical Decision Making, and Bias Awareness

Back in the 1940s, one of the grand masters of science fiction, Isaac Asimov, introduced into his stories the "laws of robotics" which were designed to protect humans from wayward machines. While machine intelligence has not evolved in ways that Asimov could have foreseen, there is still a need to ensure that AI works for the good of society. In this module, we will explore some of the ethical issues associated with AI. We will look at a CSIRO framework to help deal with these issues. We will see that decisions or predictions based on AI can be just as biased and prejudicial as those made by human individuals and groups. The Human Rights Commission recently reported the results of a poll designed to garner support for a variety of protective measures (Hunter, F. 'Human Rights Commission warns government over “dangerous” use of AI.' SMH, August 15, 2020). For example, it might be considered important that people should know when a decision which affects them, has been made by computer and that they have the right to appeal against such a decision.

Introduction

Artificial Intelligence: Ethics & Societal Challenges is a four-week course that explores ethical and societal aspects of the increasing use of artificial intelligent technologies (AI). The aim of the course is to raise awareness of ethical and societal aspects of AI and to stimulate reflection and discussion upon implications of the use of AI in society.

The course consists of four modules where each module represents about one week of part-time studies. A module includes a number of lectures and readings. Each lesson finishes with a mandatory assignment in which you write a short sum-up of the most important new knowledge/insight you gained from this lesson and review a lesson sum-up written by another student/participant. The assessments are intended to encourage learning and to stimulate reflection on ethical and societal issues of the use of AI in society.

What You'll Learn

Have a basic understanding of the AI bias phenomenon and the role of AI in surveillance
A basic understanding of the importance of democracy in relation to AI and acquaintance with common issues with democracy in relation to AI
An understanding of the complexity of the concepts ‘intelligence’ and ‘consciousness’ and acquaintance with common approaches to creating artificial consciousness,
A basic understanding of the control problem in AI and acquaintance with commonly discussed solutions to this problem, and an ability to discuss and reflect upon the ethical and societal aspects of these issues.

Modules

Module 1 - Algorithmic Bias and Surveillance

In the first module, we will discuss algorithmic bias and surveillance. Is it really true that algorithms are purely logical and free from human biases or are they maybe just as biased as we are, and if they are, why is that and what can we do about it? AI in many ways makes surveillance more effective, but what does it mean to us if we are increasingly being watched in more and more sophisticated ways?

Module 2 - Knowledge Module: What is AI, History of AI, and Applications of AI

Next, we will talk about the impact of AI on democracy. We discuss why democracy is important, and how AI could hamper public democratic discussion, but also how it can help improve democracy. We will for instance talk about how social media could play in the hands of authoritarian regimes and present some ideas on how to make use of AI tools to develop the functioning of democracy.

Module 3 - Artificial Consciousness

A further ethical question concerns whether our treatment of AI could matter for the AIs themselves. Can artefacts be conscious? What do we even mean by “conscious”? What is the relationship between consciousness and intelligence? This is the topic of the third week of the course. In the last module we will talk about responsibility and control. If an autonomous car hits an autonomous robot, who is responsible? And who is responsible to make sure AI is developed in a safe and democratic way?

Module 4 - Responsibility and Control

The last question of the course, and maybe also the ultimate question for our species, is how to control machines that are more intelligent than we are. Our intelligence has given us a lot of power over the world we live in. Shall we really give that power away to machines and if we do, how do we stay in charge?

Introduction

This first course in the IBM AI Enterprise Workflow Certification specialization introduces you to the scope of the specialization and prerequisites. Specifically, the courses in this specialization are meant for practicing data scientists who are knowledgeable about probability, statistics, linear algebra, and Python tooling for data science and machine learning. A hypothetical streaming media company will be introduced as your new client. You will be introduced to the concept of design thinking, IBMs framework for organizing large enterprise AI projects. You will also be introduced to the basics of scientific thinking because the quality that distinguishes a seasoned data scientist from a beginner is creative, scientific thinking. Finally, you will start your work for the hypothetical media company by understanding the data they have, and by building a data ingestion pipeline using Python and Jupyter notebooks.

Module 1 - IBM AI Enterprise Workflow Introduction

The goal of this first module is to introduce you to the overall specialization requirements, evaluate your understanding of some key prerequisite knowledge, and familiarize you with several process models commonly used today. In this course we will use the process of design thinking, but it is the consistent application of a process in practice that is important, not the exact process itself. There are a number of reasons for choosing the design thinking process, but the most important is that it is being applied in a cross-disciplinary way—that is outside of data science.

Module 2 - Data Collection

Throughout this module you will learn or reinforce what you already know about identifying and articulating business opportunities. In this module you will learn the importance of applying a scientific thought process to the task of understanding the business use case. This process has many similarities to that of being an investigator. You will also generate a healthy respect for the need to pause, step back and think scientifically about the main processes in this stage.

Module 3 - Data Ingestion

Cleaning, parsing, assembling and gut-checking data is among the most time-consuming tasks that a data scientist has to perform. The time spent on data cleaning can start at 60% and increase depending on data quality and the project requirements. This module looks at the process of ingesting data and presents a case study working a real world scenario.

This course targets existing data science practitioners that have expertise building machine learning models, who want to deepen their skills on building and deploying AI in large enterprises.
