UTSA achieves National Research Fund eligibility

Faculty and Staff,

It is with great pride and excitement that we share UTSA has met the State of Texas’ eligibility criteria to participate in the National Research University Fund (NRUF). Sometimes referred to as Texas Tier One, NRUF provides a dedicated source of funding to enable emerging research universities in Texas to achieve national prominence. Although our eligibility is still subject to a mandatory review by the State Auditor’s Office, the news is now public.

This milestone solidifies UTSA’s position as a university capable of tackling society’s grandest challenges on local, state and national scales. We wanted to share our deep appreciation for the significant role all of you played in achieving this critical waypoint on our path to becoming the next great public research university. Your commitment to research, excellence and student success has culminated in this moment, and we cannot thank you enough for your professional contributions that help make UTSA the exemplary, Tier One university we can all be proud to call our own.

We’d especially like to thank Vice President for Research, Economic Development, and Knowledge Enterprise Bernard Arulanandam and his team; Vice Provost for Graduate Studies and Dean of the Graduate School Ambika Mathur and her team; the five doctoral programs that completed the rigorous, comprehensive review process; and, the deans, department chairs and faculty who participated in each phase of the evaluation process. Your bold vision and leadership guided us to this point, and we are immensely grateful for your dedication and hard work.

To each of you—congratulations! Together, we are achieving greatness and paving pathways of success for current and future Roadrunners. As we continue to monitor the final audit, we’ll be sure to share progress and final approval. Until then, please take a moment to celebrate this incredible accomplishment—you so deserve it!

With deep appreciation,
