Research Interests
Stephen Ackley was a sea ice geophysicist at the U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) for approximately 30 years. His research on Antarctic and Arctic sea ice was conducted during twelve research cruises on several nations' icebreakers into the sea ice zone surrounding Antarctica and on the first Antarctic sea ice drifting station, Ice Station Weddell (1992). Since his arrival at UTSA, students and faculty have participated in over 10 expeditions to the Arctic, Antarctic, and a Mexican glacier under his leadership. His co-authored monograph on the Growth Structure and Properties of Sea Ice is extensively used internationally as an introductory review text and as reference source material for graduate students in Polar Marine Sciences.
He was awarded the National Science Foundation's Antarctic Service Medal for service in Antarctica and Ackley Point at Ross Island, Antarctica was named in honor of his outstanding sea ice research in Antarctica by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names.
