Charge

The Steering Committee will foster a culture of zero-tolerance for sexual assault and misconduct at UTSA by creating pathways for institutional systemic and culture change. Representatives from Legal Affairs, University Communications, UTSA Police Department, and other relevant units will be involved as appropriate as active participants in the committee's work.

  • Assess pending external review reports and makes recommendations to President for action steps
  • Review and recommend policy changes as needed 
  • Monitor progress of task forces and report to stakeholders on progress at regular intervals
  • Create additional task forces as needed

The President’s Initiative on Preventing Sexual Assault and Misconduct Task Force will foster a culture of zero-tolerance for sexual assault and misconduct behaviors by developing and enacting a comprehensive action plan based on the Culture of Respect core blueprint including evidence-based practices for survivor support, clear policies, multi-tiered education, public disclosure, school-wide mobilization, and continual self-assessment.

In 2019, UTSA joined the Culture of Respect Collective, a cohort of 37 higher education institutions dedicated to ending campus sexual violence. Since the inception of this Initiative, UTSA has:

  • Created a new office to assist students in navigating campus services. UTSA’s PEACE Center, located in the Student Union, adopts a trauma-informed perspective to carry out its mission of Prevention, Education, Advocacy, Consultation, and Empowerment 
  • Established a faculty and staff Survivors Alliance to educate the community about sexual violence and provide continuing support for survivors
  • Completed an administrative reorganization to unite and improve related services in Student Affairs, Campus Police, and reporting
  • Worked to improve transparency and awareness-raising by producing two annual reports containing comprehensive data from investigations handled by the UTSA Equal Opportunity Services/Title IX Office
  • Secured a $300,000, three-year grant from the Department of Justice to expand services and programs that aimed at reducing incidents of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking among college-aged students
  • Implemented the recommendations from Margolis Healy and Associates LLC, a national consulting practice, to improve campus security functions
  • Conducted an internal assessment of operations to identify opportunities for continuous improvement

UTSA remains committed to ending campus sexual violence by investing in prevention resources and support services. For example, in the fall of 2022, Wellbeing Services expanded Green Dot Bystander Intervention training to help students understand the strategies and tools they can use to prevent power-based personal violence on campus.

Charge

The Steering Committee will foster a culture of zero-tolerance for sexual assault and misconduct at UTSA by creating pathways for institutional systemic and culture change. Representatives from Legal Affairs, University Communications, UTSA Police Department, and other relevant units will be involved as appropriate as active participants in the committee's work.

  • Assess pending external review reports and makes recommendations to President for action steps
  • Review and recommend policy changes as needed 
  • Monitor progress of task forces and report to stakeholders on progress at regular intervals
  • Create additional task forces as needed
