Roadrunner Cafe opens, dining services get a new look

(Aug. 4, 2005)--Roadrunner Cafe, UTSA's first dining hall, opens this fall next to Chaparral Village and Chisholm Hall on the 1604 Campus.

The cafe, managed by UTSA food service provider Chartwells, seats 425 and has a contemporary feel with university-commissioned artwork. It has two outdoor dining patios and a private dining room available for meetings with advance reservations. Air Rowdy, the university's wireless Internet service, also is live in the cafe.

A variety of food choices will greet Roadrunner Cafe diners, beginning with the unique Mongolian Grill Island. One of the first of its kind on a university campus, the Mongolian Grill is exhibition cooking made to order with a choice of meats and vegetables. The island also features a salad bar with daily specialty salads.

The Mongolian Grill is only the beginning. The cafe has brick oven pizzas and a pasta bar, made-to-order sandwiches and paninis, homestyle meals, Mexican food, soups, baked potatoes, burgers (beef, chicken and veggie) and desserts.

For the more adventurous diner, every Friday features a different ethnic menu and there are monthly theme nights, such as Aloha Friday, Cajun Day and Taste of India.

Roadrunner Cafe will open to the UTSA community from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, Aug. 19 to give faculty and staff a first taste. Cost of the meal is $6 per person. The official opening is Saturday, Aug. 20. Hours of operation are 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. (breakfast); 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. (lunch); and 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. (dinner); Monday-Friday. The cafe is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for brunch on Saturdays and Sundays; as well as from 5 to 7 p.m. for dinner. Shuttles will be available from the Main Building and the Humanities and Social Sciences Building to Chaparral Village and back.

Along with student meal plans, the cafe accepts Rowdy Dollars and cash.

Meanwhile, the University Center food court has a new look with the Main Street Grill, Fiesta Cocina and Zatarain's. The Marketplace, located on the second floor of the Business Building, has added Skeeter's Junction. Skeeter's adds barbeque to the already expanded menu of tacos, burritos, pizzas, wraps, quesadillas and side orders. Also, a fruit smoothie concept is still in the works, and should be available for the fall semester.

The UC food court and Marketplace open their doors at the beginning of the fall semester. The UC food court hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday-Friday. The Marketplace is open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday-Friday. The Marketplace stops serving breakfast at 10:30 a.m. each day.

The UC, Marketplace and JPL will accept UTSA meal trades for certain items.
