UTSA students attend National Collegiate Leadership Conference
(Feb. 27, 2015) -- Four UTSA undergraduate students and two graduate advisors recently attended the National Collegiate Leadership Conference (NCLC) at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Ariz.
UTSA students Melanie Spiller, Leo McAfee Jr., Millie Monreal and Jaswanth Kintada and advisors Erika Garcia and Latrice Owens joined more than 500 university students from across North America to grow as collegiate leaders.
The annual conference focused on the connection between leadership, social justice and service. Attendees participated in service activities, workshops and discussions. The students also participated in the NCLC’s annual Case Study Competition, placing second for their marketing strategy, designed to promote the non-profit organization Beads of Courage.
“Participating in the National Collegiate Leadership Conference was a humbling and memorable experience,” said McAfee, a junior mechanical engineering major. “I learned important things about myself, but beyond that, I learned how people can come together and do great things.”
Keynote speakers for the event were Deanna Lewis, the first female firefighter in the history of the Tucson Fire Department, and Antonio Neves, award-winning journalist and nationally recognized expert on the millennial experience. The speakers emphasized the importance of strong leadership and leveraging leadership experience to help others.
