UTSA University Career Center hosts lecture by former NASA astronaut April 8
(March 23, 2015) -- The UTSA University Career Center and Air Force Reserve College Speaker Series will host a special presentation with former NASA astronaut Leland Melvin on Wednesday, April 8 in the University Center Denman Room (UC 2.01.28) on the UTSA Main Campus. The event is free and open to UTSA students, faculty, staff and alumni who RSVP.
The lecture and question-and-answer session will take place from 5 to 6:30 p.m. A meet and greet will immediately follow from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Melvin is an engineer, head of NASA Education and co-chair of the White House Science, Technology, Education and Mathematics Task Force.
In 2008, Melvin served aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis as a mission specialist on the 24th shuttle mission to visit the International Space Station (ISS). The following year, he was part of the 31st shuttle flight to the ISS.
Melvin has a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry and a master’s degree in materials science engineering. He holds four honorary doctorate degrees for his service in education and the sciences, and his philanthropy.
Melvin is the only person drafted into the National Football League (NFL) to have ever flown in space. In 1986, he was drafted as a wide receiver for the Detroit Lions. Later, he was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys.
