(April 1, 2015) – UTSA students from various majors came together in droves earlier this month to volunteer during their spring vacation for the university’s Alternative Spring Break (ASB). The volunteers assisted three non-profit agencies: Common Ground Relief, Schwartz Farms and the Catholic Charities Camp.

“The ASB experience taught me how important it is to work together as a team and help others,” said Abigail Roman, UTSA student and volunteer.

Thirteen UTSA students traveled to Common Ground Relief in New Orleans. The students assisted with the organization’s Wetlands Restoration Program, created to proactively address the dangers faced by New Orleans residents and the Gulf Coast region. The students also learned about these issues from Kimberly Roberts, Academy Award-nominated director for best documentary in 2008 for her film, “Trouble the Water.”

Four students worked closely with Schwartz Farms in San Antonio to educate the community about sustainable farming and animal care. The students worked to improve the farms through gardening, landscaping, assisting in animal care and feeding, and building enclosures.

Several students worked with Catholic Charities, Archdiocese of San Antonio, which runs the Guadalupe Community Center, to aid the nonprofit with its School Impact Program. The program guides children through a weeklong camp featuring craft projects and volunteer opportunities.
