(May 19, 2015) -- John D. Murphy, Jr., dean of the UTSA College of Architecture, Construction and Planning (CACP), has been elected to serve as president of the Architecture + Construction Alliance (A+CA), a national organization dedicated to fostering collaboration in architecture and construction education and research. A long-time member of the A+CA, Murphy has decades of experience in architecture, construction and educational administration.
Murphy is an advocate for the built environment. His expertise focuses on issues surrounding the science and management of building construction. He has extensive industry experience, including nearly 10 years in construction management. He is a certified construction professional, is accredited by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), and is an associate member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).
Founded in 2009, the A+CA is comprised of all the 18 member universities from across the United States where disciplines of architecture and construction reside in the same college. These universities collectively educate a significant percentage of the nation’s architecture and construction undergraduate and graduate students. The A+CA’s mission is to advance interdisciplinary collaboration and research between architecture and construction undergraduate and graduate programs by engaging professionals and educators.
“My goal as president of the Architecture and Construction Alliance is to increase, in some way, the propensity and opportunity for these two disciplines to work in concert in an educational environment in such a way that helps prepare them both for the professional roles to which they aspire,” said Murphy, who previously served as A+CA secretary / treasurer for 2014-2015.
Murphy has served as dean of the UTSA College of Architecture, Construction and Planning since 2009. Under his leadership, the college has experience considerable growth in both expertise and sphere of influence. Over the last several years, the College has created three dedicated centers for research and outreach: the Center for Architectural Engagement, the Center for Cultural Sustainability and the Center for Urban and Regional Planning Research. It also added the UTSA Department of Construction Science. Additionally, Murphy continues to lead the expansion of the College’s international studies programs.
