(Aug. 19, 2015) — Highlighting the college's vision of championing innovative programs that provide students with applied skills, the UTSA College of Business will offer a new master's degree in data analytics beginning Fall 2016.

Transforming Big Data into intelligent results, the Master of Science in Data Analytics program will produce highly skilled and educated data analysts who can convert the growing amount of data confronting all organizations into usable information for decision makers.

"We're looking for students who have good quantitative skills and a passion for analyzing data," said Max Kilger, director of the Data Analytics Program. "It is critical to train new generations to look at these large data sets in new and innovative ways."

The one-year lockstep program has a strong educational focus on data science algorithms and communication skills and offers a strong practical, experiential emphasis on the tools, techniques and technology used in the industry.

"There is a huge demand across the nation for individuals with this skill set," said Kilger. "We can help students create significant economic value for themselves and the organizations they work for."

According to a report by the McKinsey Global Institute, the United States alone faces a shortage of 140,000-190,000 individuals with deep analytical skills as well as 1.5 million managers and analysts capable of analyzing Big Data and making decisions based on their findings.

Applications are currently being accepted for the inaugural class. This program is still pending approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
