New UTSA professors become immersed on the Roadrunner way
(Aug. 11, 2015) – When first-year students come to UTSA, they attend a spirited three-day orientation that is chock-full of information and activities to get them acquainted with what college will be like as a Roadrunner.
What you may not know is that UTSA pulls out all the stops to welcome and orient its first-year faculty members too, albeit more quietly. These new professors are introduced to the city and university through a historical context. They also learn some of what makes working at UTSA especially unique and powerful.
Before each fall semester, the Office of the Provost hosts a series of orientation activities for UTSA's new faculty. This year, UTSA will welcome 40 new faculty members, advancing its GoldStar initiative to add 60 new top-tier researchers to the faculty. These researchers are among the best in their fields and specialize in science, education, engineering, business, liberal arts, criminal justice, demography and architecture. They come from top universities such as Harvard, Yale, Rutgers and Purdue and from universities in Argentina, China and Italy.
This week, the group will be immersed on UTSA's vision, culture and their important role as faculty members here. They'll learn about their vital role in UTSA's research mission, how they can make sure their students succeed, and how they can balance their teaching and research with service opportunities.
They'll also learn how to be successful in their jobs by discovering the many resources available to them, and they'll hear tips and advice from second-year and recently tenured faculty.
Their welcome will conclude with a bus tour of the city and dinner hosted by UTSA President Ricardo Romo and sociology professor Harriett Romo.
After the orientation, the hope is that these new Roadrunner faculty members will be energized to start the school year, have a sense of collegiality, and be proud to be a part of such a dynamic, supportive and high achieving institution.

About the GoldStar Initiative:
The UTSA GoldStar Initiative, which began in fall 2014, aims to recruit 60 new top researchers to the UTSA faculty to further advance UTSA to Tier One status and position UTSA as a global research leader. By adding these scholars to the faculty, thereby expanding the top-tier research faculty UTSA already has, the university will further strengthen its commitment to teaching, research and commercialization. The GoldStar Initiative will also make it possible for students to have greater learning experiences, be involved in groundbreaking studies and become the research leaders of tomorrow.
