Dear Friends,

Everywhere you look at UTSA, you see excellence. It's in our classrooms, in our laboratories, and on our playing fields.

Just this month, we've seen another great example of excellence in our athletics program with the addition of Frank Wilson as our new head football coach. Coach Wilson is widely regarded as one of the nation’s best college football recruiters. He comes to UTSA from LSU, and has more than 20 years of coaching experience, which includes taking teams to eight bowl games. But what impresses me most about Coach Wilson is his commitment to supporting our student-athletes in the classroom as well as on the football field. He understands the importance of a top-tier education.

We're also reaching new levels of excellence in research and discovery. Most recently, our vice president for research, Mauli Agrawal, has become the first UTSA faculty member to be named a National Academy of Inventors Fellow. A scholar in biomedical engineering, Dr. Agrawal is recognized for his research and innovation in orthopedic and cardiovascular biomaterials and implants. His selection as a Fellow places him among an international 'who's who' in the commercialization community.

The world recently got a new perspective about what's happening 26 million light years away from Earth, thanks to a UTSA professor. Eric Schlegel, our Vaughan Family Endowed Professor in Physics, working with colleagues at Harvard, has made a scientific breakthrough in the understanding of black holes. Dr. Schlegel has discovered a supermassive "burping" black hole whose behavior has never before been recorded by researchers. His work is shedding light on how galaxies are formed.

Imagine what it's like for our students to be able to work alongside Dr. Schlegel, or Dr. Agrawal, or Coach Wilson. These are the types of world-class opportunities that students can only get at UTSA, and it wouldn't be possible without your support.

We've started off 2016 on a great note, and it's just going to get better. I am so proud of the incredible work of our faculty and staff, and the passion and commitment of our students. This is what top-tier is all about. This is where excellence happens.

Go 'Runners!
