The Mystical Arts of Tibet tour visits UTSA
(November 17, 2016) -- The Mystical Arts of Tibet tour made a stop at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) this week. Tibetan Buddhist monks from Drepung Loseling Monastery have been at the UTSA Main Campus constructing a mandala sand painting.
Their visit coincides with International Education Week, a nationwide celebration of international education and exchange programs that prepare students for the global workforce.
The monks began the creation of the mandala sand painting on Monday, November 14, 2016 with an opening ceremony during which the site was blessed before an outline of a mandala was drawn on a wooden platform. The monks worked on their sand painting through Thursday and completed it just before dismantling it at the closing ceremony.
The dismantling of the mandala symbolized the fleeting nature of life. During the closing ceremony, the sands were swept up and placed in an urn and half was distributed to the audience. The remainder of the sand was carried to a nearby body of water to be deposited.
