(Sept. 1, 2017) -- San Antonio is a big city -- and still growing! Near UTSA, new places are sprouting up all the time. Here are a few fun things to do when you’re not hitting the books.
1. Six Flags Fiesta Texas
Okay, this one’s pretty obvious. It’s practically next door. If you’re not familiar with the brand, Fiesta Texas is home to classic thrill rides, as well as a water park, making it a great place to unwind on a weekend. It also has fireworks every night to help you appreciate that big Texas sky. The Roadrunner Express in the UC sells discounted tickets.
2. Food Truck Fun
If you want to step off campus for a casual bite to eat, check out The Block on Roadrunner Way. It’s a picnic-style park with a rotating group of food trucks to cater to your every craving. In downtown San Antonio, food trucks are a hop, skip and a jump away. Check out any online map for loads of choices.
3. Shopping!
Need some retail therapy? UTSA is surrounded by shopping centers. The Shops at La Cantera and The Rim are up near the Main Campus. Both centers have new stores opening all the time. The Downtown Campus is in close proximity to San Antonio favorites, including all the shops in the city center and along the world-class River Walk.
4. Indoor Skydiving
If you have a special occasion coming up or just some extra money to burn, you might want to test your mettle at iFLY, an indoor skydiving facility that allows visitors to “fly” in a wind tunnel. The destination gives visitors the experience of skydiving without actually, you know, jumping out of an airplane.
5. Practice your golf swing.
Skydiving not your cup of tea? Try out Topgolf, where you can eat a burger topped with fried mac and cheese while playing golf and enjoying a majestic view of San Antonio. Seriously… What’s not to love??
6. Explore nature.
While most people might think of Texas as a desert, we know better. There’s plenty of green spaces to embrace, and we’re quite sure that the best one near UTSA is Leon Creek Greenway Park. It’s a beautiful multi-use trail just five minutes from the Main Campus and is great for hiking, biking or just a quiet stroll. Learn more about San Antonio’s awesome parks and rec.
7. Take in some culture.
If the Lyric Theatre doesn’t have any performances coming up, catch a play or a musical down the road at the Woodlawn Theatre, a non-profit community theatre that puts on classic plays and musicals each month.
8. Check out the Missions.
The Alamo isn’t the only historic site in San Antonio! The San Antonio Missions are a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring a trail of four Spanish frontier missions that are hundreds of years old. Each is uniquely beautiful and traveling down the trail to visit each of them makes for a fun, inspiring day.
9. Root for the Spurs.
Interested in sports? Root for the Spurs, San Antonio’s NBA team. They’ve earned a whopping five NBA championships. That’s five victory boat parades along the San Antonio River Walk.
Loyalty for the silver and black runs deep in San Antonio. Check out a home game this season at the AT&T Center.
