(Aug. 15, 2018) -- Families in the San Antonio community seeking enrichment experiences in math, reading and college access will find greater opportunities this fall at the UTSA Downtown Campus. The UTSA College of Education and Human Development’s Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching will offer its Support and Enrichment Experience (SEE) Math program and the Center for the Inquiry of Transformative Literacies’ Roadrunner Readers Program in collaboration with The Institute for P-20 Initiatives Parent Engagement Program to serve families with kindergarten through 6th grade children in a more holistic approach.
Children in grades kindergarten through 5th grades are invited to participate in the SEE Math program which offers support and enrichment in math (with STEM connections) through hands-on approaches and meaningful connections with an emphasis on learning through problem-solving as students are paired with UTSA students who are future teachers.
Additionally, children in grades 2nd through 6th who need assistance with reading will work with UTSA tutors that will identify each child’s strengths and needs and create highly engaging literacy experiences designed to support their literacy growth and development. While children are participating in these programs, their families will be invited to attend parent engagement sessions that will encourage leadership, college access and college awareness and encourage their continued support of their child’s early academic succession planning. Parents will also be encouraged to recognize and reinforce the many ways that they already support their child’s success in their everyday home lives.
“Family engagement and support is a very important part of student success,” said Belinda Saldaña Harmon, director of community outreach for The UTSA Institute for P-20 Initiatives. “Research indicates that when families participate in supporting their children academically it has a positive impact on their child’s grades. UTSA is eager to continue to find new ways to collaborate that will benefit our students and families in the community.”
The classes will be held at the UTSA Downtown Campus beginning with a family orientation from 5:00 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, September 6. Classes will then meet on Tuesdays or Thursdays through November. A nominal fee will be charged for the tutoring classes to cover supplies and parking.
