(Jan. 28, 2019) – The UTSA African American Studies Program this week presents the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Lecture Series with keynote speaker Walter Kimbrough, president of Dillard University. Known as the “hip hop President” for promoting free speech on college campuses, Kimbrough has a reputation for motivating, encouraging and guiding university audiences to strive for success in academia and in the community.
The UTSA Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Lecture Series began in 2016 to provide scholarly global appreciation of diverse and social justice issues relevant to our society. This year’s event is from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 30 in the Student Union Retama Auditorium (SU 2.02.02) on the UTSA Main Campus. It is free and open to the public.
In addition to an inspiring message from Kimbrough, UTSA MLK, Jr. 2017 Scholarship Winner Genesis Cogle will address the audience during the lecture. The UTSA Women's Choir will provide a musical tribute.
"Dr. King believed in education and the impact education can have on one's ability to grow socially, theoretically and spiritually,” said Karla Broadus, UTSA senior lecturer and director of the UTSA African American Studies program. “If our students truly engage in our lecture series speakers and not only become thinkers as well as change agents, our UTSA campus will become a true leader of inclusiveness."
Kimbrough is one of the youngest college presidents in the nation. In October of 2004, at the age of 37, he was named the 12th president of Philander Smith College. In 2012, he became the seventh president of Dillard University in New Orleans, La. In 2014, he was honored as the Historically black colleges and universities (HBCU) President of the Year.
Additionally, Diverse: Issues in Higher Education named Kimbrough as one of 25 To Watch in 2009. He was cited in 2010 by Bachelorsdegree.org as one of 25 college presidents you should follow on Twitter by Education Dive. In 2010, he was cited as one of the Ebony Magazine Power 100 doers and influencers in the African American community. In 2013, he was named to NBC News/The Griot.com’s 100 African Americans making history today.
Kimbrough is recognized for his research of college level African American men, diversity issues and HBCUs. He also is the author of the book Black Greek 101: The Culture, Customs and Challenges of Black Fraternities and Sororities.
He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia, a Master of Science degree in college student personnel services from Miami University and his doctorate in higher education from Georgia State University.
