(April 10, 2019) -- UTSA women’s basketball forward Tija Hawkins is one of 14 Conference USA student-athletes to receive the C-USA Winter Spirit of Service Award.

The C-USA Spirit of Service Award is designed to recognize the community service efforts of the league's student-athletes, based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport. The Spirit of Service Award is presented three times throughout the season, with today's honorees representing winter sports: men's and women's basketball, indoor track & field and swimming & diving.

Hawkins was actively involved in numerous community service activities throughout this past year. She helped students move-in to their dorms, worked multiple basketball clinics with the team, spoke to fourth and fifth graders at Boone Elementary, volunteered at the San Antonio Food Bank and visited Methodist Children’s Hospital where she handed out stuffed animals with teammates. She also helped Andy Everett during football season with interviews, gaining experience in broadcasting.

On the court, the Killeen, Texas, native finished the season averaging 12.7 points and 5.8 rebounds. She’s also on the top-50 scorers list at UTSA with 599 career points. Hawkins led the team in field goals made with 155.
