The new UTSA Transportation Building located near East Campus Lot 3
(May 1, 2019) -- The ‘Runner will soon have a new home on the UTSA Main Campus, which means more parking for commuters later this summer. The ‘Runner buses are currently located in Brackenridge Avenue Lot 2 (BK2). Moving the bus fleet to the new Transportation Building on East Campus will add almost 100 student commuter parking spaces to BK2, a popular parking location due to its proximity to the campus core.
“The additional parking spaces made available by the bus relocation will maximize the ability to park in this popular lot,” says Clay Haverland, assistant vice president for Campus Services.
Relocating the buses also will increase safety for pedestrians in and around BK2, a high-traffic area of campus.
Located adjacent to East Campus Lot 3, the Transportation Building will provide offices for the Campus Services transportation team and a new home for The ‘Runner bus fleet.
“Moving the transportation headquarters to East Campus limits buses in areas with significant foot traffic, which in turn improves pedestrian safety,” Haverland notes.
The 2,400 square foot building provides updated facilities for the growing transit operation. Inside, the building houses essential office and work space for transportation employees.
“The Transportation Building is a powerful resource for our department to continue providing excellent transportation services on campus,” said Haverland. “We are excited to see The ‘Runner move to the Transportation Building, providing our team with a dedicated work space so we can continue to enhance the campus experience for our riders.”
As part of the university’s sustainability initiatives, The ‘Runner plays a significant role in reducing traffic and CO2 emissions on campus. As more customers opt to leave their vehicles at home and use shared transportation, transportation services reduce on-campus parking by an average of 3,000 parking spaces during peak class times. This saves students personal vehicle miles, maintenance, and gas money. In 2018, UTSA shuttles saved an average of 650 metric tons of CO2 based on average vehicle emissions.
The Campus Services transportation team and The ‘Runner bus fleet will move into the Transportation Building on May 20. Updates to BK2 will be completed over the summer.

Each fall and spring semester, students convene at the Main Campus at UTSA with booths, ideas and prototypes. A crowd of judges, local organizations, students, faculty and sponsors walk around and talk to the students about their projects and ask questions. Students get the real-life experience of "pitching" their project with hopes of getting funding or support to move to the next level.
