Oct. 30, 2019 — Basketball season is here! You can get your first glimpse of the Roadrunner men when they open the season on Wednesday, Oct. 30 with an exhibition contest against Texas A&M International. The game tips off at 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center.

5 REASONS YOU SHOULD WATCH A GAME AT THE CONVOCATION CENTER

Tickets are very affordable. It can be pricey to go watch college basketball teams with legitimate hopes of making the NCAA Tournament, but that’s not the case at UTSA. Season tickets start as low as $99 (that’s less than $7 a game) and single-game tickets are only $10 apiece. As always, UTSA students receive free admission to all home games by showing a UTSA ID.

Free swag! When the Roadrunners scored 100 points against Florida International last year everyone in the Convocation Center went home with a coupon for a free Whataburger. A blowout and a burger—it was basketball bliss for the fans in blue and orange. Whether it’s T-shirts, hats, or food and haircut coupons, UTSA Athletics and the team’s sponsors do everything they can to make sure a good chunk of fans go home happy.

Group tickets are also a great deal. Group tickets (for 15 or more fans) are available for all of UTSA’s home basketball games. Group ticket prices are only $5 to $7 per ticket. They’re a fantastic buy for company outings, school groups and youth sports teams. Plus you’ll be recognized during the game!

The Roadrunners rule the roost. Fun fact: UTSA boasts a tremendous 34–11 record in home games since Steve Henson became head coach. That means the ’Runners have won more than 75% of the time at the Convocation Center over the past three seasons. Needless to say, it’s a lot more fun to go cheer your team to a win rather than a loss.

The team needs you there. Ask any player on the team, and he’ll tell you about the boost it gives the Roadrunners to play before packed stands at the Convocation Center. With expectations higher than they’ve been in years consistently loud and proud UTSA crowds will go a long way in the team putting together a truly memorable season.

5 KEY HOME GAMES

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
Tuesday, Dec. 3 | 7 p.m. | Buy tickets | Watch on: CUSA.tv

The Roadrunners and Islanders will renew their rivalry from UTSA’s former days in the Southland Conference in this early December showdown. A&M-CC finished in sixth place in the Southland last year but are widely expected to improve in 2019–2020. This game will kick off a daunting December stretch for the Islanders in which they play five out of six games on the road.

Illinois State
Saturday, Dec. 21 | 3 p.m. | Buy tickets | Watch on: CUSA.tv

This is the most intriguing nonconference game on the home schedule. The Redbirds have regularly placed toward the top of the Missouri Valley Conference since 2007, finishing with 17 or more wins in all but one of the past 12 seasons. Illinois State has also appeared in seven postseason tournaments during those dozen years. The Redbirds are known for playing strong defense, so this matchup should provide a good test for UTSA’s high-powered scoring offense.

Louisiana Tech
Thursday, Jan. 9 | 6 p.m. | Buy tickets | Watch on: ESPNU

Not only is this UTSA’s first home game of the season against a conference opponent, but ESPNU will be in the house to give this big game a national broadcast. It should be an entertaining one. Louisiana Tech has a legitimate star in senior DaQuan Bracey, who joined UTSA’s Jhivvan Jackson and Keaton Wallace on the preseason all-conference team. Bracey is a versatile point guard who led Louisiana Tech in scoring, assists and steals last season.

UTEP
Saturday, Jan. 18 | 3 p.m. | Buy tickets | Watch on: ESPN3

UTSA won both of its games against the last-place Miners a season ago, but all signs point to UTEP making a big upward jump in the Conference USA standings in 2020. UTEP started several freshmen last year, but those young players showed plenty of promise. Six new transfers—from schools such as Louisiana State, Texas Christian and Fresno State—will join the roster this season, which should be a nice complement for UTEP’s youth movement.

Western Kentucky
Saturday, Feb. 15 | 2 p.m. | Buy tickets | Watch on: CBS Sports Network on Facebook

This is the only scheduled matchup between the two preseason favorites to win Conference USA, and a raucous crowd at the Convo could give the ’Runners an important home-court advantage. UTSA split a pair of road games at Western Kentucky last year, but the Hilltoppers have surrounded talented center Charles Bassey with several intriguing weapons this year, including freshman point guard Jordan Rawls and grad transfer Camron Justice.

5 KEY ROAD GAMES

Oklahoma
Tuesday, Nov. 5 | 7 p.m. | Watch on: SoonerSports.tv

The season opener presents a tough challenge for the Roadrunners. Oklahoma reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season as a No. 9 seed, and the Sooners are expected to be in the mix for another March Madness trip this year. The good news? Guards Christian James and Aaron Calixte—who combined for 42 points in Oklahoma’s 2018 victory over UTSA—have graduated since last season. The bad news? Formidable forwards Brady Manek and Kristian Doolittle haven’t.

Utah State
Monday, Nov. 18 | 8 p.m. | Watch on: Stadium on Facebook

Fresh off a 28-win season as the Mountain West Conference’s regular season and tournament champions, Utah State starts off this season ranked 17th in the Associated Press poll. The Aggies are powered by their own dynamic duo, senior guard Sam Merrill (2019 MWC Player of the Year) and 7-foot sophomore center Neemias Queta (2019 MWC Freshman of the Year). Both considered entering the NBA Draft in the offseason, but ultimately decided to stay put.

Texas State
Saturday, Dec. 7 | 4 p.m. | Watch on: ESPN+

The I-35 Rivalry has been as competitive as ever the past two seasons. UTSA defeated Texas State 79–78 in San Marcos in 2017, but the Bobcats returned the favor with a 69–68 victory at the Convocation Center in 2018. With UTSA and Texas State both returning squads capable of winning a conference championship, this should be one of the most anticipated games in the history of the series.

Oregon State (in Houston)
Wednesday, Dec. 18 | 4:30 p.m. | Buy tickets

UTSA’s matchup with Oregon State is the first game in the Battleground 2K19 college basketball tripleheader being held that evening in Houston’s Toyota Center. The Beavers won 18 games last season and finished in fourth place in the Pac-12. Oregon State senior forward Tres Tinkle will likely be a handful for the Roadrunners. He led the team in scoring, rebounding and steals last year on his way to a second consecutive All-Pac-12 First Team selection.

Old Dominion
Thursday, Feb. 6 | 6 p.m. | Watch on: ESPN3 or ESPN+

The Monarchs are the defending Conference USA champions, but the Roadrunners gave them all they could handle in two meetings last season. One was a 65–64 victory for Old Dominion and the other was that monumental UTSA comeback win you may have read about earlier. The Monarchs may have lost all-conference stars B.J. Stith and Ahmad Carver, but when these two teams clash, it’s usually compelling. We’re expecting more of the same in 2020.

BONUS PLAY

In 2018 Conference USA adopted a unique scheduling system called “Bonus Play” to create more opportunities for its best programs to play high-profile games at the end of the season. Here’s how it works: After the first 14 conference games have been played, each team is placed into one of three groups based on the conference standings. The first group includes teams 1 through 5 in the standings, teams 6 through 10 fall in the second group, and 11 through 14 in the third. During the final two weeks of the season, each team plays its last four games against the other teams in its group. These games will take place between Feb. 22 and March 7. The Roadrunners will aim to reach the first group for the second consecutive season.

TOURNEY TIME

The Conference USA Tournament will be held March 11–14 at the Ford Center in Frisco. Only the top 12 of Conference USA’s 14 teams qualify for the tournament. You can buy tickets to the event online. The first round and quarterfinal games will air on ESPN+ and Stadium. The semifinal and championship games will air on CBS Sports Network.
