Roadrunners kick off an event-packed Homecoming Week

Homecoming Week offers a slate of events to allow Roadrunners to be engaged with each other and the community.

Oct. 14, 2019 — UTSA students, alumni, faculty and staff are all coming together as fellow Roadrunners to show off their orange-white-and-blue spirit at nearly 20 events during this year’s Homecoming Week, Oct. 14–20, on the Main and Downtown Campuses. 

The action-packed week of events leads up to the Homecoming football game on Saturday, Oct. 19, when the Roadrunners face Rice University with a halftime-show crowning of the new Mr. and Ms. UTSA.

HOMECOMING WEEK HIGHLIGHTS

Golf Cart Parade

Monday, Oct. 14, 11 a.m., Paseo Principal, Main Campus
Various student organizations will converge outside the Student Union to showcase “Spirit, Tradition and Pride.” After the parade, people can vote for their favorite golf cart via social media and by donating canned goods to the Roadrunner Food Pantry. 

Take Back the Night

Monday, Oct. 14, 6–9 p.m., Sombrilla Plaza, Main Campus
The UTSA Women’s Institute and #ChangeRapeCulture are giving survivors of sexual and domestic violence and their allies the space to express themselves to help build a safer campus and community. The annual event, which focuses on preventing sexual and domestic violence, will begin with a poster-making session at 6 p.m. A march around campus will follow before there are poetry and testimonial readings from 7 to 9 p.m. 

Mr. and Mrs. UTSA Voting

Tuesday, Oct. 15 and Wednesday, Oct. 16
Students can cast votes for who they think should take the reins as the new Mr. and Ms. UTSA on RowdyLink. The winners will be announced during halftime at the Homecoming game. 

Thanks Day

Tuesday, Oct. 15, 10 a.m.–2 p.m., Sombrilla Plaza, Main Campus
Roadrunners can show appreciation to university donors by signing a large thank you card. Those who participate will receive a sweet treat. 

Game Week Wednesday

Wednesday, Oct. 16, 11 a.m.–2 p.m., Sombrilla Plaza, Main Campus
With snacks, games and giveaways, the Rowdy Crew and different UTSA Athletics teams are gearing up for the big game as well as giving out information about Rally at the Alley and Spirit Walk. 

Roadrunners Live

Wednesday, Oct. 16, 7 p.m., H-E-B Student Union Ballroom, Main Campus
Teams and individual acts can show off their best talents on stage for bragging rights and the chance to earn the Roadrunners Live champion title for 2019. Fraternity and Sorority Life started the campuswide talent show in 2011 as a friendly competition. 

Downtown Blitz

Thursday, Oct. 17, 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m., Bill Miller Plaza, Downtown Campus
Students, faculty and staff can get in the homecoming spirit with a pep rally featuring the Spirit of San Antonio marching band and the Mr. and Mrs. UTSA candidates. There also will be food, games, giveaways and music to enjoy. 

Comedy Show

Thursday, Oct. 17, 8 p.m., H-E-B Student Union Ballroom, Main Campus
Roadrunners can grab a few laughs with a special comedy performance from Mike Epps. Epps is best known from the films Next Friday and The Hangover as well as Def Comedy Jam. The doors open at 7 p.m. and showtime is 8 p.m. The show is open to UTSA students only and seating is limited. 

T-shirt Exchange Field Day

Thursday, Oct. 17, 5–8 p.m., Student Union Lawn, Main Campus
Take a T-shirt from a high school or another university to get a free UTSA shirt in return. Three nonperishable items also can be donated toward the Roadrunner Food Pantry for a free shirt. During the event, students can form teams to take part in a field day competition. 

Golf Tournament

Friday, Oct. 18, 8 a.m., SilverHorn Golf Club, 1100 W. Bitters Road, San Antonio
In an event sponsored by alumnus Pat Clynes ’89, preregistered golfers will take a swing to help raise money for the campus recreation student staff for future opportunities to attend national and regional conferences. 

BestFest

Friday, Oct. 18, 4–10:30 p.m., Brackenridge Avenue Lot 1, Main Campus
About 92 campus organizations are set to have a selection of food, drink and game booths. The event also will feature interactive activities, live music, carnival rides and a fireworks display. The event opens at 4 p.m. with DJ Gumby getting the tunes started. Austin Party Band plans to take the stage from 6 to 7:30 p.m. A pep rally will follow at 8:45 p.m. along with the fireworks show at 9:10 p.m. Grammy award winner Daya will finish the night off at 9 p.m. The event is free, but BestFest tickets are required for food and drinks. 

Roadrunner Nation Tailgate

Saturday, Oct. 19, 2–5p.m., Alamodome Lot C, along Cherry Street
The Alumni Association plans to gear up for the Homecoming game with sausage, beer, giveaways and music at its own tailgate event. Admission for association members is free. Nonmembers get in for $20, and children 16 and under are free. 

Rally in the Alley Roadrunner Crew Tailgate

Saturday, Oct. 19, 2–5:30 p.m., Roadrunner Alley, Alamodome Lots B and C
Roadrunners can throw on their orange, white and blue gear for some pregame fun with music, games, free food with a student ID and the Spirit Walk. Shuttle rides to the Alamodome from Main Campus are available 1–3 p.m., departing in front of the Convocation Center. 

Food Drive

Saturday, Oct. 19, 2–5 p.m., Rowdy Town, H-E-B Plaza, Alamodome (north side)
UTSA will hold a food drive sponsored by Whataburger prior to the Homecoming game. Fans are encouraged to take cans and nonperishable food items to donation bins that will be located in Rowdy Town in H-E-B Plaza on the north side of the Alamodome. Monetary donations also are encouraged and accepted. Every dollar donated provides the equivalent of seven meals. All donations will be given to the San Antonio Food Bank. Anyone who donates a minimum of two cans and nonperishable items will receive one coupon for a free Whataburger while supplies last. 

Spirit Walk

Saturday, Oct. 19, 2:45 p.m., Roadrunner Alley, Alamodome Lots B and C
Help the marching band and cheerleaders welcome head football coach Frank Wilson and the team as Rowdy leads the way to the stadium before kickoff. 

Homecoming Game: UTSA vs. Rice

Saturday, Oct. 19, 5 p.m., Alamodome
The ’Runners take on the Rice Owls at this year’s game. The Spirit of San Antonio marching band will take the field at halftime for a performance and the new Mr. and Ms. UTSA will receive their crowns. 

Storytelling Brunch

Sunday, Oct. 20, 10:30 a.m., Student Union, Denman Ballroom, Main Campus
This special Homecoming Storytelling program is expected to bring current students and alumni together to share their leadership experiences at UTSA. The Storytelling Luncheon Series, which happens once each semester, is a free networking experience for students.
