Oct. 19, 2019 — Students Cambriege Wesley and Karla Madrigal were named Mr. and Ms. UTSA during the halftime show at Saturday’s Homecoming football game. Sponsored by the Office of Student Activities and the Homecoming Committee, the award recognizes UTSA students striving for academic achievement, campus involvement and community service.
Showcasing some of the university’s finest students, the 2019 Homecoming Court also included Qiwei Chen, Ikponmwonsa “IK” Iredia, Jerusha Thomas, and Javier Silva.
Candidates competed in several categories, including an application process, formal interview, a platform presentation and a student vote for the chance to be named Mr. and Ms. UTSA. While each member of the Homecoming Court would be a capable representative of the university, only two can claim the honor.
Cambriege Wesley hails from Killeen and is an accounting major. He is an active member of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, financial coordinator for the Roadrunner Student Alumni Association and serves as the treasurer of Men of Honor. He also has worked as a student coordinator for Orientation and Family Programs. Wesley’s platform, Runner Stash Initiative, focuses on benefiting the student emergency fund to help fellow Roadrunners in need during an emergency, like Hurricane Harvey.
Karla Madrigal hails from San Antonio and majors in biology. She is the founding president of the organization Community Support Team, a member of Doctors Without Borders local chapter, an Honors College student and service lead, and a Terry Scholar. Madrigal’s platform, Cultura x UTSA, focuses on celebrating all cultural holidays through a campuswide culture day as well as increasing conversations about international relations and encouraging fellow Roadrunners to participate in study abroad opportunities.
