Architecture professor named to prestigious national team

FEBRUARY 5, 2020 — Hazem Rashed-Ali, an associate professor in UTSA’s Department of Architecture, has been named to the American Institute of Architects Higher Education Advisory Team. He’s just one of six members selected to serve a biennial term.

The volunteer team provides insight and expertise to advise, share and promote the issues, needs, trends and aspirations of architectural education and educators. The team’s goal is to improve and inform the future of architecture, education and development of future architects.

“By joining the AIA Higher Education Advisory Team, I hope to contribute to the process of strengthening the relationship between schools of architecture and the professional community and identifying areas of collaboration that both sides can contribute to and benefit from,” said Rashed-Ali. “I believe many opportunities exist for enhancing this relationship both with regard to architectural research and other potential areas of collaboration.”

At UTSA, Rashed-Ali teaches design studios as well as building technology, environmental systems, and building performance simulation and evaluation courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. His current research focuses on sustainable architecture and urbanism with an emphasis on minimizing the negative environmental impacts of the built environment through the design of high-performance, energy-efficient and carbon neutral buildings and communities.

“I look forward to contributing to that important process, and I believe my current role as president of the Architectural Research Centers Consortium and my work in other national organizations can increase the effectiveness of that contribution,” he added.

“Dr. Rashed-Ali’s appointment to this important group highlights UTSA’s national reputation for having a top-quality architecture program and faculty—and most important, for the exceptional work they do in preparing our architecture students for their chosen careers,” said Kimberly Andrews Espy, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. “By serving on the AIA Higher Education Advisory Team, he will help to further ensure that UTSA remains at the forefront of connecting architecture education with innovations and best practices in industry.”
