APRIL 24, 2020 — To better reflect a renewed focus on social justice and equitable approaches for students, the Center for Intercultural Programs and Student Engagement has changed its name to the Multicultural Student Center for Equity and Justice.
“Feedback we received from our closest stakeholders helped us make the decision to take a new direction with a new name,” said Brandi Scott, the center’s director. “In our discussions we heard from our students that there is a need for more intentional and meaningful work that supports a socially just and equitable campus community.”
The center is home to student-focused efforts such as the Dreamers Resource Center, heritage month celebrations, campus events like Celebrate UTSA, ally trainings, and the Chomp and Chat dialogue series, among other programs. In addition to its current programming MSCEJ will broaden its mission to include activities designed to promote community building and campus advocacy.
“This department has a long history of leading programs and services that support the diverse backgrounds of our students,” said LT Robinson, senior vice provost for student affairs and dean of students. “This update highlights a natural evolution to bring awareness to the strength and experiences of historically marginalized communities and new opportunities to collaborate with student organizations to foster an equitable and inclusive campus community.”
“Future initiatives will be informed by continued stakeholder feedback,” said Scott. The center is planning for peer facilitators, increased campus resources for Dreamers, social justice advocates and more.
“We are committed to working with students, student organizations and the campus to build new programs and events that uphold our mission,” said Scott.
In the coming weeks MSCEJ will host virtual listening sessions with student organizations, faculty and staff affinity groups, and the campus community regarding suggestions for future programs. Look for more information about these sessions on RowdyLink.
