SEPTEMBER 18, 2020 — Longtime supporters of The University of Texas at San Antonio David and Jennifer Spencer ’93 have generously committed $100,000 to support student-athletes and the university’s vision for student success.
With football season under way, the Roadrunners have maintained a positive attitude and continue to play with enthusiasm despite facing the unique challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. Head football coach Jeff Traylor referred to his team as an inspiration: “Their mindsets have been fantastic, and they are a joy to be around every day.”
What can be considered a stressful situation for any student has become a unique learning opportunity for student-athletes. It is this rigor that led David and Jennifer Spencer to make such a spirited gift to support all students in Roadrunner Athletics.
“UTSA’s student-athletes have taught us all a valuable life lesson. While they may have thought no one was looking, all of Roadrunner Nation has witnessed their hard work and determination. Both Jen and I wish that all people were approaching these unsettling times in the same way our student-athletes are. They never complain, they trust the process, they control what they can, and they set an example for all of us,” said David Spencer.
Spencer serves as CEO of Prytime Medical Devices Inc. and Mandelbtor Ventures. His support for the university runs deep and includes serving on the Development Board and College of Engineering Advisory Council, earning the 2018 UTSA Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award, and supporting Roadrunner Athletics year after year. He also played a crucial role in founding UTSA’s Center for Infrastructure Assurance and Security, leading to the university’s cybersecurity program designation as one of the best in the country.
As part of their commitment, the Spencers also encouraged Roadrunner fans to help match their gift. The matching challenge generated major support from university friends and donors, including Jon and Susan Wampler, who committed one of the largest single donations to the challenge. The Wamplers are both current members of President’s Associates, and Jon Wampler also served as a member of the Athletics Advisory Council. Because of their generosity and that of others, the challenge exceeded its goal.
While the Roadrunners have had to work through many unknowns in 2020, student-athletes have handled the situation with extraordinary resilience and unwavering commitment to excellence.
At their football season opener, the Roadrunners took home a win against team rival Texas State Bobcats. On September 19 the team will face off with Stephen F. Austin State University.
David and Jennifer Spencer remain impressed with the fervor and positivity of UTSA’s student-athletes and look forward to continuing to cheer them on at every game possible.
