Graduate School launches new National Perspectives series

Graduate School launches new National Perspectives series

FEBRUARY 4, 2021 — The Graduate School at UTSA will launch a new series, National Perspectives: Graduate and Postdoc Exploration of Multiple Career Pathways, this semester to showcase a marquee of star speakers.

Hosted through the fully virtual Center for Graduate and Postdoctoral Career and Professional Development, the series provides integral career readiness training and networking opportunities for UTSA’s graduate student and postdoctoral scholar population, and will also be relevant for faculty and staff members working with graduate students.

This exciting new series features talks by national thought leaders and experts who represent a wide variety of career sectors. National Perspectives kicks off at 1 p.m. on February 9 with Suzanne Ortega, president of the Council of Graduate Schools. She will present an overview of the current state of graduate education and share results from the CGS Project, supported by the National Science Foundation and the Andrew Mellon Foundation, on careers for graduate students.

“We are excited to provide career readiness support to our students in an impactful manner.”

Discipline-based national perspectives will be offered by experts following this overview. CGS vice presidents Julia Kent and Hironao Okahana will discuss careers in the humanities and social sciences, and careers in STEM will be presented by the nationally-renowned Melanie Sinche, author of the seminal book in this field. A panel of alumni and employers representing different career sectors will inform trainees of the necessary steps to prepare and succeed in careers in desired areas.

“This series empowers The Graduate School and our new virtual center to offer support to students and postdoctoral scholars through GPS in a way that has never been done before at the graduate level,” said Ambika Mathur, vice provost and dean of The Graduate School. “We are excited to provide career readiness support to our students in an impactful manner.”

The series will culminate with talks by alumni, employers and national leaders who will speak on their own leadership trajectories, including anticipated discussions from UTSA’s senior leadership during future sessions. The National Perspectives series provides a significant opportunity to explore multiple career pathways across a wide variety of disciplines, preparing UTSA’s graduate and postdoctoral population to enter the professional or academic workforce with the training and tools needed to make a profound impact on their communities.

“We hope that everyone in the graduate and postdoctoral training community at UTSA will join us for these sessions as we give back to the university community and help our students prepare for their future careers,” Mathur added.
