Install SafeBoot
OPTION 1: (Recommended)
If you would like to have the Help Desk install the software and start
the encryption process, simply bring your laptop to the OIT Help Desk. (Plant
Building, Second Floor)
You must leave your laptop at the Help Desk. Turn-around time will
vary depending on workload and the time it takes to encrypt your laptop. Plan
on leaving your PC at the Help Desk for at least 24 hours.
OPTION 2:
If you would like to install SafeBoot by yourself, the Help Desk will
place the executable file on your PC’s desktop.
You must have administrative rights to your PC and your PC must be connected
to the UTSA network.
We recommend that you back up all important data before installing SafeBoot. Contact
the OIT Help Desk (458-5538) for more information on how to back up your
data.
NOTE: If your laptop does not have VPN installed,
then you can go to the following web link to download and install the
VPN software: https://www.utsa.edu/infotech/VPN/
- Unzip the file and rename Safeboot42.sbi to Safeboot51.exe
- To begin the software installation, double-click the Safeboot51.exe icon.
- Once the software has been installed, you must click Finish to
restart your PC.
- Log on to the UTSA network with your UTSA network ID and password.
NOTE: If
you are off campus, you must log on using the VPN client. The
VPN client can be downloaded at https://www.utsa.edu/infotech/VPN.
- Find the SafeBoot icon (lower right-hand corner of your screen) and
select Synchronize.
- Right-click the SafeBoot icon and select Show Status. The
pop-up window should display the encryption status “In Progress.”
- Once encryption has started, you must restart your PC. The
encryption process will be restarted.
- Upon restart, the SafeBoot logon screen is displayed.
- Logon with your SafeBoot logon name (same as your UTSA network account
ID – “abc123” format), along with the temporary password
that the OIT Help Desk assigned you. If you need help with your
temporary password, contact the OIT Help Desk, 458-5538.
- Click OK.
- You will be required to create a new SafeBoot password. In
order to simplify the process, we suggest you use your UTSA network
logon password. Confirm your new password and click OK or
Restart.
- You will then need to log in to the UTSA network, using your UTSA
account ID and password.
- After you have logged on, verify the encryption progress by
right-clicking the SafeBoot icon and selecting Show Status. You
should see that encryption is in process. The time required to encrypt
your PC is dependent on several variables including processor speed
and amount of data on the hard drive. Some PCs may be encrypted
in two hours, while others may take eight or more hours to process.
- Set up single sign-on synchronization by restarting your PC. Please
note that this step may need to be repeated in order to apply the
single sign-on feature.
- At the SafeBoot login screen, log in with your SafeBoot logon ID
and password. The Windows splash screen will be displayed, followed
by the UTSA Security Notification screen. Click OK to
continue.
- The system should log you directly into Windows by using your SafeBoot
log in credentials. If it does not log you in, you must until
the encryption process completes, then restart your PC.
NOTE: ENCRYTION
PROCESS WILL VARY DEPENDING ON SIZE OF THE HARD DRIVE. POSSIBLY
2-8 HOURS TIME TO ENCYPT.
