It’s the biggest week of the summer for camps at UTSA

(June 12, 2017) -- The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) is the Alamo City’s summer camps destination. Throughout the summer, UTSA will offer more than 60 camps in science, engineering, architecture, sports, music, writing, language, culture and more for kids, teens and young adults.

Campers will develop new skills or strengthen existing ones while experiencing what it’s like to be on a college campus. Campers will work on their athletic skills, build robots, explore archaeological techniques, develop musicianship and even learn Chinese and Japanese languages.

This week, UTSA is offering the following camps:

Engineering Summer Camp
Monday to Friday, 8:45 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Main Campus

This exciting and interactive day or overnight camp for high school students teaches engineering design and problem solving approaches using out of the box thinking. The camp will have interactive workshops, hands-on challenges, tours, panels and competitions.

Summer Career Academy in Architecture and Interior Design
Monday to Friday, 11:30 a.m. - 4 p.m., Downtown Campus

This two-week camp introduces high school and college students and adults to the careers and education of architects and interior designers. Campers will gain hands-on insight from UTSA's top-tier faculty and find out if interior design or architecture are right for them.

iTEC Camps
Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m., Main and Downtown Campuses

Campers will explore the fields of science, technology, engineering and math through hands-on activities. This week, campers in kindergarten through 2nd grade will study robotics and chemistry. Third through 5th grade campers will learn about engineering and delve into Sphero challenges. Campers in 6th through 8th grade will explore physics through robotics. Ninth through 12th graders will learn how to program their own robot.

Performing Arts Camp
Monday to Friday, 9:30 a.m. – 3 p.m., Buena Vista Theater, Downtown Campus

This intensive workshop style camp is for students in 3rd through 8th grade interested in the performing arts, both onstage and behind the scenes. Instructors are all working professionals and college students in the field. Students will receive instruction in acting, voice, dance, theatre history, music theory, costuming, stage properties and more.

Middle School Summer Band Institute
Sunday to Saturday, times vary, Main Campus

During this overnight camp, middle school musicians will focus on developing their musical and playing techniques. Campers will perform with one of UTSA's concert bands and attend classes that include rehearsals, sectional and master classes and performing soundtrack music.

Japanese Language and Culture Camp
Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m., Main Campus

Campers will enjoy the summer learning to read, write and speak the Japanese language. They also will learn about the Japanese culture and spend time cooking, creating arts and crafts activities with an East Asian theme. This camp is intended for children ages 6-12.

Young Writer's Camp
Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Main Campus

Emerging and fluent writers can practice and refine their writing skills, share with others and grow as artisans and thinkers. Each day, students will investigate the art of writing, apply the craft to their own writing, and celebrate what they have done with fellow campers.

Roadrunner Readers Program
Monday to Thursday, 10 a.m. – 11 a.m., Downtown Campus

The tutoring sessions are designed to help children in 2nd-8th grades who are reading below grade level. Tutors identify the child's strengths and needs and create highly engaging literacy experiences designed to support literacy growth and development.

Football Camps
Monday to Friday, times vary, Main Campus

Join Head Coach Frank Wilson and members of the UTSA Football coaching staff, as they host football camps for all ages and skill levels, including Future Runners Youth Camp, Extra Point Kicking and Snapping Camp and Friday Night Lights.

Men’s Basketball Camps
Monday to Saturday, times vary, Convocation Center, Main Campus

Boys and girls entering 1st through 12th grades will start the week learning basic fundamentals to enhance their shooting skills.  A second camp later in the week is designed for parents and children to work together to execute the fundamentals of the game.

Baseball Camp
Monday to Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m., Roadrunner Field, Main Campus

Campers will join UTSA Baseball coaching staff and players for three days of lectures and drill work in throwing, hitting, fielding, fly balls, base running and bunting. Position-specific work will be covered in the full-day session. Campers will also get to compete in the Roadrunners Olympics and two bag games.

Softball Camp
Tuesday and Wednesday, times vary, Roadrunner Field, Main Campus

During this All Skills Camp, 7th through 12 graders will be put through a series of infield, outfield and offensive drills as well as game-like situations. Hitters and pitchers will face live at bats during camp.

UTSA Soccer Academy
Monday to Sunday, times vary, Park West Athletics Complex

The UTSA Soccer coaching staff and members of the UTSA Soccer team host two camps this week for boys and girls from novice to advanced level. The Summer Youth Camp is designed for boys and girls in 1st through 8th grades. Players in 5th through 8th grade can work on their skills at the Junior Elite Camp. High school girls will also have the opportunity to improve their soccer skills during a weekend overnight camp.
