EXECUTIVE DIVISION

What we do:

The Executive Division is responsible for leading the department towards the fulfillment of its mission. It brings the commanding officers of all the divisions to formulate the leadership team. That team meets weekly to discuss crime trends and other department issues to ensure that the needs of all of our customers are met.

 

Chief of Police

Chief BarreaChief of Police Steve Barrera was hired as the new UTSA Chief of Police on 1 May 2010.  Chief Barrera recently retired from the San Antonio Police Department as Deputy Chief – Service and Support Division Commander.  During the span of his 30 year career in SAPD, Chief Barrera held a diverse range of positions as he advanced through the ranks.  Chief Barrera has a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from The University of Texas at San Antonio (class of 1982), where he also taught in the Criminal Justice Department as an Adjunct Faculty member.  He received his Master’s degree in Public Administration from Texas State University.  He is also a former Adjunct Professor of Public Administration at Wayland Baptist University.

 

 

Assistant Chief of Police

pena.jpgAssistant Chief Daniel Pena attended The University of Texas System Police Academy, in1980. He moved up the ranks within the UTSA PD from detective, to Investigations Sergeant, to Investigations Lieutenant, to Administrative Captain. He was promoted to Assistant Chief in 2001. Assistant Chief Pena has attended the FBI National Academy, 165th session - Quantico, Virginia, in 1991 and the American Crime Prevention Institute: Crime Prevention through Environmental Design - Advanced Specialist in 2003. Assistant Chief Pena has a Bachelor of Science degree from Wayland Baptist University - San Antonio, Texas: in Criminal Justice (2002). The Assistant Chief of Police is responsible for managing police operations and personnel to effectively provide a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors.
