Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering

Ram Krishnan joined the UTSA faculty in 2010. His research area is a mix of fundamental and applied aspects of cybersecurity. He is currently interested in topics such as utilizing machine learning techniques for the purpose of cybersecurity, developing novel techniques for security and privacy enhanced machine learning, automated cyber threat intelligence sharing and response, and improving Android’s current permission model. 

Krishnan’s work has appeared in multiple refereed venues including ACM Conference on Computer and Communications Security (CCS), European Symposium on Research in Computer Security (ESORICS), International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE) and IEEE Transactions on Dependable and Secure Computing (TDSC).

He has secured over $13 million in competitive research funding from organizations like the National Science Foundation (NSF), the U.S. Department of Defense, the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the MITRE Corporation.

At UTSA, Krishnan serves as Associate Dean of Graduate Studies for the Klesse College and Executive Director of the Institute for Cyber Security (ICS). In addition to holding the Lutcher Brown Endowed Chair in Cybersecurity, he also holds the Microsoft President’s Endowed Professorship in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. 

Krishnan’s remarkable research and teaching have earned him several awards, including the NSF CAREER Award (2016), the University of Texas System Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award (2015), the UTSA President’s Distinguished Award for Research Achievement (2016), the UTSA Innovation Award (2019) and the Klesse College Teaching Excellence Award (2022).

Krishnan earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from George Mason University.
