International businessman Richard S. Liu facilitated collaborations and joint programs between UTSA's Carlos Alvarez College of Business and five of the top universities in Beijing and Shanghai. Having this strong partnership with UTSA, Richard S. Liu's Family Foundation established the Richard S. Liu Distinguished Chair in Business endowment in 2005.

Da-Hsiang “Don” Lien is a world-renowned finance researcher who has published hundreds of papers in academic journals in the fields of economics, finance and statistics. His primary expertise is on futures markets with secondary interests in econometrics and development economics.  

In 2005 he was named the top finance researcher in the world according to the SIRCA financial ranking system, based on his research from 2000-2005 in the top 17 finance journals.  

Prior to joining UTSA in 2001, Lien was on the faculty of the University of Kansas. Over the years he has served as visiting professor or research fellow at institutions such as Washington University, Columbia University, the National University of Singapore, Singapore Management University and Tsinghua University, among others. Lien earned his Ph.D. form California Institute of Technology.
