Prosperity, Power, and Progress

September 15 – October 15, 2023

Each year across the U.S., people observe National Hispanic Heritage Month by celebrating the rich histories, art, stories and cultural contributions of those whose ancestry can be traced back to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The month begins September 15 because that is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18.

Throughout Hispanic Heritage Month, UTSA will showcase community leaders, faculty, staff and students around significant themes in Latinx culture. During these challenging times with the ongoing pandemic, racial unrest and political divide, UTSA’s celebration will focus on hope and resilience mirroring the national theme for this year. Roadrunners will celebrate the month with this guiding theme: “Prosperity, Power, and Progress”.

Did you know?

Adelina "Nina" Otero-Warren, a Mexican American educator and activist, who fought for women's right to vote and blazed a trail when she ran for Congress will be the first Latina face to be featured on a U.S. coin. Recognizing her leadership in New Mexico's movement for women's right to vote as well as her role in both politics and education, Otero-Warren’s image was stamped on the U.S. quarter. The quarter which was presented last month, is a part of the U.S. Mint’s American Women Quarters Program. This four-year program focuses on women's accomplishments and contributions to American history.
