The NIH/NIGMS-funded RISE (Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement) program is designed to assist underrepresented students to attain their doctoral degrees in the biomedical and behavioral sciences.

The UTSA RISE PhD program supports 20 students toward obtaining their degrees in Biomedical Engineering, Developmental & Regenerative Sciences, Chemistry, Molecular Microbiology & Immunology, Neuroscience, Physics, or Psychology. RISE trainees are selected competitively and receive financial support, mentoring, travel funding for conferences, professional development and leadership training, and instruction in grant writing. It is our mission to assist our students to develop as exceptional leaders and researchers and launch into successful careers in biomedical or behavioral sciences.
