UTSA photo of the day: Blood Clot Ultrastructure
(July 22, 2015) -- Clots are the human body's way of stopping bleeding in order to successfully heal itself. Using an electron microscope, UTSA associate professor of biomedical engineering Anand Ramasubramanian captured this ultrastructure image of a blood clot with its fibrin fibers and platelets.
For the past several years, Ramasubramanian has studied the body's natural healing processes. Most recently, in collaboration with the South Texas Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases, he and several graduate students have been working with researchers from the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research to test the efficacy of platelets stored in cold temperatures for emergency blood transfusions in battlefield settings.
