(Sept. 1, 2015) - - UTSA Student Government Association (SGA) President Ileana Gonzalez recently was appointed by District 8 City Councilman Ron Nirenberg and the San Antonio City Council to a two-year term on the city’s Ethics Review Board. At 21-years-old, the senior entrepreneurship major from Guadalajara, Mexico is the youngest person ever to serve on the board and will represent San Antonio District 8.
“I am ecstatic and honored to represent District 8 on the Ethics Review Board,” said Gonzalez. “I hope to serve the district’s constituents to the best of my abilities. I believe that in this coming year we can focus on increasing transparency and access to local government. Sustaining trust is an ongoing pursuit for government, and it always will be.”
Established in 2004, the Ethics Review Board is a body that investigates complaints of ethical misconduct and violations of the city’s Ethics Code and campaign finance regulations. The board convenes whenever an ethics complaint is filed against the city.
The mayor and city council appoint members to the board based on their character and standing within the community. The current board consists of experienced professionals from across the city including lawyers, teachers and former district attorneys. According to Nirenberg, the appointment of Gonzalez to the board as a vote of confidence toward youth leadership in municipal government.
“Ileana personifies our hopes and aspirations for San Antonio’s future,” said Nirenberg. “Despite her youth, she is a leader with a vision, and we will do well to have her service in a critical position of authority like the Ethics Review Board.”
“When I was seeking to fill this appointment, I wanted to find someone who had an uncompromising standard for municipal integrity, someone who had a passion to make San Antonio a better place and who had the energy and motivation to make it happen. Ileana was the perfect choice,” said Nirenberg.
Gonzalez was elected SGA president for the 2015-2016 academic years by the UTSA student body in April. Previously, she served as treasurer and vice president for marketing of the Business Student Council. She also is the current Ms. UTSA for 2014-2015; the first female SGA president to serve both as president and Ms. UTSA simultaneously.
