At UTSA Orientation, student leaders welcome new Roadrunners
(July 5, 2016) -- Every summer, incoming freshmen flock to the UTSA Main Campus for Orientation. During the two-and-a-half day program, students become acquainted with fellow Roadrunners and begin the transition from high school to life at a top-tier university.
Of course, none of this would be possible without Orientation leaders. These UTSA students take new students under their wing and help to show them the ropes before classes begin in the fall.
“When I was in Orientation, I loved the way my Orientation leaders made me feel about coming to UTSA,” said Isabella Beltri, a junior and now an Orientation leader herself. “I felt really excited and welcome here. I wanted to make the same impact on other students and show them how great UTSA is.”
Beltri, a psychology major from Round Rock, Texas, said her favorite part of Orientation is the Roadrunner Walk, which introduces new students to various UTSA traditions.
“They’re learning what it means to be a Roadrunner, and they’re making friends,” she said. “So am I. I love being their first friend entering college and creating friendships within our groups.”
Students also receive their first taste of college life without the pressures of starting a new school year—something that Orientation leader Adrian Guajardo said is important to the transition.
“It gives them a chance to see that college can be fun, and that this change is exciting,” he said.
Guajardo, a business major from Pharr, Texas, said he loves taking on a leadership role during orientation as well as playing games to get to know each new group of Roadrunners.
“At the end of Orientation, each team performs a chant that we’ve been working on,” he said. “It’s wonderful to see them become a part of our community.”
