Slideshow: UTSA celebrates future at Presidential Inauguration

(March 22, 2018) -- For just the sixth time in university history, UTSA inaugurated a president. On Tuesday, members of the UTSA community, leaders across Texas, and friends and delegates from around the nation gathered at the UTSA Main Campus to celebrate the Inauguration of UTSA President Taylor Eighmy.

A series of speakers, including UT System Chancellor William H. McRaven, San Antonio District 5 City Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales and UTSA Student Government Association President Marcus Thomas, spoke about the promises of great growth and prosperity for UTSA under Eighmy’s leadership.

Carmen Tafolla, a professor in the UTSA Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies and 2015-2016 Texas Poet Laureate, read “Estrellas of Possibility,” the poem she wrote for the Presidential Inauguration. Eighmy called it UTSA’s poem, saying, “…the UTSA community of 40,000 individuals is a constellation made up of 40,000 “ESTRELLAS” or stars.”

Following several performances from student musicians and dance groups and the ceremonial conferring of the presidency, Eighmy delivered a heart-felt speech.

“Our job is to help you (students) find your dream and realize your dream,” Eighmy said. “This is your time while you’re here to realize your dream.”
