UTSA to explore budget redesign at upcoming panel discussion

(June 19, 2018) – To advance UTSA’s strategic vision as an institution of operational and infrastructure excellence, the Finance and Budget Modeling Task Force will host a panel from 1 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, June 26, featuring representatives from four universities that have implemented incentive-based budget models. The meeting, which is open to all members of the campus community, will be held in the Business Building Richard Liu Auditorium (BB 2.01.02) on the UTSA Main Campus. Additionally, the discussion will be broadcast live to the Durango Building (DB 2.304) on the Downtown Campus.

Panelists will include:

  • Drew Clark, director of the Office of Institutional Research, Auburn University
  • David Jewell, associate vice president for financial affairs, University of Wyoming
  • Michael A. Pagano, dean of the College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs and professor of public administration, University of Illinois at Chicago
  • Douglas Priest, senior associate vice president for finance, Indiana University Bloomington

The panelists will share the lessons they learned during the implementation of new budget models at their respective universities. Attendees will explore the benefits of incentive-based budgets and will have an opportunity to ask questions about instituting a new budget at UTSA. The panelists, Finance and Budget Modeling task force members and representatives of Huron Consulting, the firm assisting with UTSA’s budget redesign efforts, will respond to questions from the UTSA community.

Last fall, President Taylor Eighmy charged the Finance and Budget Modeling Task Force with creating a strong foundation for UTSA’s fiscal health and laying the groundwork for the growth and innovation to come. Since that time, the task force has been working to create a new budget model that is transparent and data-driven, supports entrepreneurship and innovation, and aligns resources needed for the university’s strategic mission, vision and themes.

“We are now in the third phase of our task force’s work,” said Kathryn Funk-Baxter, UTSA vice president for business affairs and chair of the Finance and Budget Modeling Task Force. “We have met with each dean more than once and continue engagement sessions with leadership, department chairs and others to secure more input on the budget tool. We will run our current and the new budget models in parallel in the 2019 fiscal year and make improvements along the way so we will have a strong, viable new model to use in fiscal year 2020.”
