Enhance your campus experience by getting involved

Enhance your campus experience by getting involved

(Aug. 28, 2019) -- Another school year has begun at UTSA. The university’s campuses are once again filled with students rushing in all directions to get to class. There’s a lot more to the UTSA experience than attending class, labs and studying. There are countless ways for Roadrunners to get involved in their school community.

The beginning of a new school year is the perfect time to discover new opportunities and experiences at UTSA. Whether you’re a freshman just getting adjusted to college life or a senior preparing to graduate, there are numerous ways to enhance your college experience. Here are just a few of the ways you can get involved at UTSA:

Involvement Fair

There are over 350 student organizations at UTSA. Two involvement fairs taking place during Roadrunner Days provide a great opportunity to learn about some of them. The Get Involved Fair and Leadership Expo – Downtown Campus is on Tuesday, September 3, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Bill Miller Plaza. The Get Involved Fair and Leadership Expo – Main Campus takes place on Thursday, September 5, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Sombrilla Plaza. Both events will provide opportunities to talk to representatives from a wide variety of campus organizations.

RowdyLink

If you’re unable to make it to an involvement fair in person, you can learn about campus groups and events online through RowdyLink. This online tool is UTSA’s directory for student organizations. RowdyLink includes a calendar of upcoming events on campus. Each student organization also has a home page that includes social media and contact information, so you can easily reach out to any organizations that interest you.

UTSA Fraternities and Sororities

Another way to meet new people is through UTSA’s fraternities and sororities. These organizations can provide a sense of community by forging close relationships. There are multiple Fraternity and Sorority Life events at the beginning of the semester, as each organization sets up fun, free events to meet new students. On Wednesday, August 28, the Fraternity|Sorority Life Mix & Mingle will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Student Union Retama Auditorium (SU 2.02.02) and Student Union Lawn.

The Roost

A great place on campus to hang out with friends and meet new people is The Roost, a game room located on the second floor of the H-E-B Student Union. All you need is your student ID to access billiards tables, ping pong, air hockey, and dozens of video games on six different gaming systems. You can pop in for a quick game between classes, or sign up on RowdyLink for game tournaments held every week.

At the Downtown Campus, students can relax in the recreation room on the second floor of the Frio Street Building. This space features televisions, bean bags, pool tables and more. It’s a great place for downtown students to hang out.

Campus Rec

You can stay in shape while having fun, learning, and meeting new people at Campus Rec. This facility offers students opportunities to work out, join club and intramural sports teams, and even take cooking and nutrition classes.

Students who have class at the Downtown Campus can also get in on the action. Located on the third floor of the Durango Building, the Downtown Fitness Center features cardio and strength equipment. The Rowdy SportCourt is an outdoor basketball court located between the Durango Building and the Frio Street Building where Roadrunners can work on their skills or play a pick-up game with friends.

Work Study

Getting a work-study job is a great way for students to earn money while learning new skills and gaining work experience, all without having to leave campus. Students can find out if their eligible and get more information on the work study program.

Volunteer

Roadrunners care about their community, and volunteering gives them a chance to give back. UTSA provides students with numerous opportunities to make a positive difference in the world through Volunteer Services, an extension of the Student Center for Community Engagement and Inclusion.

Students can start the school year off right by participating in Roadrunner Days Service Projects on Saturday, September 7. Roadrunners will meet at the Student Union Window Lounge at 8:30 a.m. to enjoy a free breakfast before splitting up to serve at multiple service projects.
