Ian Caine will present the final installment in UTSA's 50th anniversary speakers series.
Dec. 17, 2019 — Ian Caine, an associate professor of architecture in the College of Architecture, Construction and Planning and the director of UTSA’s Center for Urban and Regional Planning Research, will discuss What Would a Sustainable San Antonio Look Like? as the final installment of the 50th Anniversary Scholars Speakers Series tonight.
“When it comes to climate change, cities like San Antonio are both the problem and the solution,” said Caine. “Cities cover less than 2% of the Earth’s surface, yet they produce 60% of the world’s carbon and greenhouse gas emissions. As we consider how San Antonio will respond to the climate crisis, we need to imagine what a sustainable city would look like, how it would work and who it would serve.”
Caine’s work explores the forms, processes and impacts of urban expansion. The results appear in architecture and planning journals as well as popular press outlets like Discovery Channel, San Francisco Chronicle and Metropolis.

When it comes to sustainability, Caine said the three biggest challenges facing San Antonio faces are figuring out the cost, who will pay and when the bill is due.
“This conversation is meant for anyone who loves cities,” Caine said. “I will make the case that there is no technological solution to the climate crisis. We cannot invent our way out of it. If we want to live sustainably, we need to reinvent our relationship with the city, the environment, and each other.”
Hosted by UTSA’s College of Architecture, Construction and Planning, Caine’s presentation will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 17 at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, Feik Family Rotunda, 115 Auditorium Circle in San Antonio. This event is free and open to the public.
Doors to the venue will open at 6 p.m. A cash bar will be available. Caine will begin speaking at 6:30 p.m. and will be available to meet with attendees and answer questions at 7:15 p.m.
